Reading Scales

Children frequently find difficulty in interpreting data by reading scales. This demonstration supports their learning and provides a range of different scales, numbered marks and unnumbered marks on a scale. It also provides opportunity to discuss the different units of measurement.

Reading and interpreting scales

The Reading Scales application provides a set of animated illustrations for use in demonstrating how to read and interpret the YHGfL and national weather monitoring data presented on the NEN website http://weather.atomwide.com/

Individual elements of the monitoring scales may be operated manually to illustrate how increased activity affects the reading for each component:

1. Wind direction

2. Rain rate

3. Barometric pressure

4. Outside temperature

5. Outside humidity

6. Solar and UV radiation

It may be helpful to bring similar components into the classroom for handling and comparison eg barometer, thermometer etc. Use the Weather Forecast application as an extension to this activity.
