SIX TEENAGERS from a Swinton school took the stage by storm and walked away with the regional title in the national Rock Idol competition.

Warning Shot, from Swinton Community School, wowed the judges when they strutted their stuff via video conference into Doncaster South CLC.

“Great vocals and fantastic music ability”, were the kind of comments by the three judges.

The band travelled to the Hallam FM studios, where presenter Matt Foister presented them with their prize – an electric guitar and amplifier. He also gave them a guided tour around the station. The band was in competition with five others from schools around the region, all of which impressed the panel of judges with their level of musical skills and sheer enthusiasm.

The final marks were very close and the judges felt that all the bands had the potential to go on to greater things – but there had to be a winner on the day and Warning Shot now go through to the national final at the end of this month (November), hosted by the West Midlands Grid for Learning.

They will perform from Doncaster South City Learning Centre, where there is a proper studio, complete with Green Screen technology, allowing for some interesting backdrops to the action!

Judges included Dave Griffiths and Becky Mollart, from The Music Factory (producers of Jive Bunny), who were well impressed with the level of professionalism among the teenagers.

“It is just great to see so many youngsters involved in real music and their commitment and musical ability is brilliant,” said Dave.

YHGfL press officer, Kassie Holliday, who was also on the judging panel, said: “I was truly wowed by all the groups – the level of proficiency and sheer enjoyment in what they were doing was just so amazingly high.”

All the bands were tasked with writing an original composition for the competition, which was no mean feat. Performing cover versions is hard enough but to write and perform your own material is pretty daunting.

A flurry of online voting via the YHGfL website followed as soon as footage of the performances were put up there, with an amazing 2052 votes cast from supporters around the region.

And they endorsed the judging panel’s choice by also picking Warning Shot as their winner too!
