eSafety
There are many aspects to keeping safe online.
Schools will be dealing with the policies, infrastructure and education they need to put in place to ensure eSafety at a personal, organisational, network and data security level.
Parents will need to understand the risks their children may be exposed to, and how they can supervise and support their children effectively.
Young people themselves will need to develop the skills to evaluate the way they use technology at home and at school, identify those risks and develop ways to balance the risks with the benefits.
YHGfL and our member local authorities are here to support all these groups to ensure everyone can enjoy our technology-rich society in a safe and responsible way.
If you would like some support in assessing where you are on your eSafeguarding journey, why not request an initial eSafeguarding Support Session? Whatever your starting point, we will meet with key staff in the school to identify strategy, policies and procedures helping you to create a coherent plan to ensure that your school is well underway on the eSafeguarding journey.
Strategy
The senior leadership of the school needs a clear strategy in place which takes a whole-school approach to eSafeguarding. Planning, prioritising, resourcing, identifying roles and responsibilities need to take place.
Policy
A range of appropriate policies need to be in place covering both technical and behavioural issues: for example, policies on Acceptable Use; Remote Access; Use of Mobile Devices and Risk Assessment
Procedures
Coherent workable procedures need to be in place which the appropriate people are aware of and have access to. Procedures need to cover areas such as: issuing and keeping safe user names and passwords, incident reporting, risk assessment procedures and classification of data.
Awareness raising and training
The school needs to have a prioritised, all-inclusive training plan or approach which embeds eSafety across all areas of the curriculum. Training will probably include a range of approaches and audiences – pupils, teaching staff, support staff, senior leaders, governors, parents and carers.
It should cover awareness raising and education about eSafety issues and may also include specific training on technical issues such as network security, deploying antivirus software and implementing access controls.
