Safer Internet Day 2010

Safer Internet Day wass on Tuesday 9th February 2010. This annual event is organised by Insafe, the European internet safety network. It is a great opportunity for schools and organisations working with children and young people to get involved and help to raise everyone's awareness of how they can keep themselves safe whilst having fun using the Internet and mobile communications.

The theme for Safer Internet Day 2010 was 'Think Before You Post' and we hope that all users of the Internet will stop and think about what they post online. There are many issues to think about: what personal information you post on social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, who can see what you post online, what photos and videos you upload or share, the content of text messages you send, the comments you leave for other people. Revealing too much personal information, cyberbullying, sexting and gang-related activities are amongst some of the risks you could be exposing yourself to if you don't think before you post.

During Safer Internet Day, the eLearning Team at YHGfL wereout and about working directly with schools and young people to organise fun activities promoting the safe use of the Internet.

CEOP's Safer Internet Day portal is your one-stop shop for everything you need for Safer Internet Day 2010. Full of ideas and resources, you can enter their exciting video competition, hold a special SID assembly, find resources for parents or see what else is going on around the country and much much more.

Safer Internet Day isn't just for young people!

At YHGfL we believe it's not just young people that need to 'think before they post'. It's important that adults who work with children and young people also think about how they use technology, both in work and in their personal life, to ensure they don't put themselves at unnecessary risk.

Using Facebook Safely: A Guide for Professionals Working With Young People

We know that many staff enjoy using Facebook but may find it difficult to know what settings they should choose to help keep themselves safe. YHGfL have produced a handy guide to help them out. This guide takes you through some of the risks and shows you the settings you can change to help protect yourself.
