The NEN and British Pathe End of Schools Licence

Author webteam
Posted at 3:18 pm

After many months of national negotiations it has been decided that the increased cost for a continuation of the The British Pathe Schools Licence is prohibitive.

As a consequence the British Pathe service will stop on 31st July 2008 after which date schools will not be able to download high-resolution files without charge.

Material which has previously been downloaded may be used for a further year; that is until July 31st 2009. The licence for all British Pathe files expires at that point and all downloaded files have to be destroyed.

The following conditions apply for the end of the British Pathe schools licence.

1. The facility for schools to download high-resolution movie files or stills without charge through the NEN will be withdrawn at the end of the summer term on 31st July 2008.

2. Movie files or stills already downloaded before 31st July 2008 can be used in schools for a further year; i.e. until 31st July 2009

Primary School Small Projects

Author webteam
Posted at 4:02 pm

Each year YHGfL has been able to fund some schools in order to promote the feasibility, research and development of teaching and learning resources. This year funding for secondary schools has been provided by BECTA with the Repurpose, Create and Share project. As primary schools were not eligible to bid for this project YHGfL are still providing some funding to support small projects.  It is time to register your School’s interest in bidding for a slice of this funding.

Project Requirements

YHGfL will consider supporting projects which result in the creation of materials suitable for use within the curriculum up to and including key stage 2. These materials could be designed for teacher and/or learner use.   The resulting materials must:

  • show genuine innovation in use of digital resources
  • fill a gap in existing resources and not replicate materials that are currently readily available
  • not replicate projects already being undertaken by other organisations in the region
  •  be accessible by all relevant learners and/or teachers
  • exemplify good subject learning and teaching
  • be capable of sitting within/accessed through a learning platform (YHGfL will pay for scorming)
  • be shareable, portable and not platform specific
  •  have any copyright assigned to YHGfL
  • demonstrate value for money
  • demonstrate sustainability
  • Collaborative projects are encouraged but not essential.

Guidelines (these are guidelines only, they are not intended to restrict innovation)

  • We would expect funding applied for to be matched.
  • Funding applied for will be in the region of £2000.
  • Project timescales would usually be within a full term.

In some cases YHGfL may offer an alternative form of support e.g. training or facilities  The completed form should be emailed to:

primaryprojects@yhgfl.net

Final decisions are made on a bi-monthly basis so you should allow at least 2 months lead time for your project. If a project is accepted the Key Contact will collaborate with a named member of the YHGfL eLearning Team. The project will be subject to YHGfL project management criteria to ensure tracking and reporting.

Weather Stations with Webcams!

Author webteam
Posted at 1:43 pm

YHGfL has purchased a Weather Station for each of our member LAs and, via our website, it is possible to view real-time data and forecasts from those already installed.

By navigating the list in the left-hand column, each weather station in the region can be accessed. In addition, real-time pictures from the webcam attached to the Weather Station in Selby are also available. Ultimately all stations will have a webcam and, as and when they do, more pictures will be coming online.

Funding has been made available from the Royal Geographical Society and YHGfL for the development of more teaching and learning resource examples for the project and work is soon to be undertaken in collaboration with West Cliff Primary School, in Whitby and All Saints Catholic College, Huddersfield, towards this.

YHGfL has also joined forces with the LGfL and SWGfL in developing national weather resources for schools.

The link for you to add into your own website is: http://www.yhgfl.net/weatherstations/
