There are two ways in which games can be used within education.
Firstly game based learning offers an exciting way to motivate learners by embedding existing curriculum activities into a more engaging learning framework.
This type of learning may use existing platform games such as Brain Trainer, Guitar Hero, Endless Ocean and other educational/strategy games. Using this approach, the content and/or context of the game forms the basis of the learning experience. Alternatively, game development software can be used where learners create their own games. This approach can be used to demonstrate use of ICT, multimedia, storytelling and problem solving.
Secondly, there is a range of game development qualifications for those interested in pursuing a career in the games industry. These qualifications cover both game design and game production, whether using software programming or ‘drag and drop’ game editors.
