Weather Stations

Weather Stations with Webcams!

YHGfL has purchased a Weather Station for each of our member LAs and, via our website, it is possible to view real-time data and forecasts from those already installed.

By navigating the list in the left-hand column, each weather station in the region can be accessed. In addition, real-time pictures from the webcam attached to the Weather Station in Selby are also available. Ultimately all stations will have a webcam and, as and when they do, more pictures will be coming online.

Funding has been made available from the Royal Geographical Society and YHGfL for the development of more teaching and learning resource examples for the project and work is soon to be undertaken in collaboration with West Cliff Primary School, in Whitby and All Saints Catholic College, Huddersfield, towards this.

YHGfL has also joined forces with the LGfL and SWGfL in developing national weather resources for schools.

YHGfL Weather Stations

The United Kingdom is a nation of people obsessed with the weather, and the study of climate is a fascinating activity with relevance in many areas of the National Curriculum, including geography, maths and science. The NEN Networked Weather Station takes advantage of the latest data-gathering technology to monitor a wide range of weather variables and send their values across the NEN to a central database - without the need for a dedicated PC. This database can be queried through the link below to see the current status of active weather stations, compare conditions at different sites, or present graphs and tables of archive data

The Weather station is based around a Vantage Pro2 Plus integrated sensor suite, produced by Davis Instruments. This unit monitors a multitude of weather variables :-

  1. Anemometer vane - this measures wind direction
  2. Wind cups - these measure wind speed
  3. Rain collector - this measures rainfall
  4. UV and solar sensors - these measure radiation of wavelengths 290-390nm and 300-1100nm respectively
  5. Sensor Interface Module - this is powered by a solar panel and transmits sensor readings to an indoor base station
  6. Radiation shield - this contains temperature and humidity sensors

The weather stations are also linked from our GIS product LOC8.  In the gazzetteer just search for Weather Station
